Which church is the most beautiful in Iceland? Many travellers would name one of these four: Hallgrímskirkja, Akureyrarkirkja, the Blue Church in Seyðisfjörður, and Stykkishólmskirkja.

 

Iceland’s Most Beautiful Churches

• The most famous church in Iceland
  For most visitors, the best-known church is Hallgrímskirkja in Reykjavík (Hallgrímskirkja). It’s one of the country’s defining landmarks.
  Note: although its name ends with “kirkja” (church), it is not a cathedral (bishop’s seat). It’s a Lutheran parish church.

• Where are the actual cathedrals (bishop’s seats)?
  The Evangelical Lutheran bishop’s seat in Iceland is Dómkirkjan in Reykjavík (Reykjavík Cathedral, Dómkirkjan í Reykjavík).
  The Catholic bishop’s seat is Landakotskirkja (Basilica of Christ the King).

The “most beautiful” churches

• Hallgrímskirkja – A dramatic exterior inspired by basalt columns, with an impressive pipe organ inside.
• Akureyrarkirkja (Akureyrarkirkja) – Clean modernist lines, perched above town with a beautiful view.
• Seyðisfjörður Blue Church (Seyðisfjarðarkirkja) – A pastel-blue wooden church, often described as the most charming “little church” in Iceland.
• Stykkishólmskirkja (Stykkishólmskirkja) – A striking modern design with a memorable curved silhouette.

Hallgrímskirkja is the most famous; the official cathedrals are Dómkirkjan (Lutheran) and Landakotskirkja (Catholic); and when it comes to sheer beauty, these four are among the most frequently singled out.
