There are two well-known saints named Columba in the Church’s tradition: the virgin martyr of Sens and the martyr of Córdoba.
In our parish, there is only one person with the baptismal name “Columba.” When she first introduced herself as “Columba,” I admit I paused for a moment—wondering, “Was there really a saint with that name in the Catholic Church?”
Saint Columba
“Columba” means “dove” in Latin, a word that naturally evokes peace and the Holy Spirit. Within the Church’s memory, two female saints named Columba are especially well known:
- Saint Columba of Sens — a virgin and martyr associated with Sens in Gaul (modern-day France). Feast day: 31 December.
- Saint Columba of Córdoba (also called Columba of Spain) — a virgin martyr among the Martyrs of Córdoba in 9th-century al-Andalus (Islamic-ruled Spain). Feast day: 17 September.

Saint Columba of Sens (3rd century) — the young woman protected by a bear
According to tradition, Columba fled persecution and eventually suffered martyrdom at Sens. One striking element in her legend is the story that, while she was imprisoned and in grave danger, a bear appeared and protected her. She was ultimately beheaded for her faith.
Common symbols associated with her include:
- the palm branch (a sign of martyrdom)
- a bear (a sign of divine protection in the traditional account)
Meditation point: “God comes to the aid of the weak.” Even in fear, she did not let go of her trust.

Saint Columba of Córdoba (9th century) — a consecrated woman who bore witness to truth
Saint Columba of Córdoba is remembered as a virgin and martyr connected with the Christian community of Córdoba during a time of persecution. She is honored among the Martyrs of Córdoba, and her feast is kept on 17 September.
Meditation point: “Speak the truth in love.” Discernment and courage—holding fast to the heart of faith even when the cost is high.

Names and symbols at a glance
Columba = dove: a sign of peace, purity, and the Holy Spirit
Palm branch: the sign of martyrdom
Bear (for Columba of Sens): a traditional symbol linked to the story of protection

Prayer for today
Saints Columba,
you who trusted God steadfastly even in weakness and fear,
grant us your courage,
that we may bear witness to the Gospel in peace and in truth.
Amen.
